ICONIC

Murray Gold was started by aquaculture pioneer Col Beasely, who wanted to maximise the potential of the precious water on his grape and almond farm. Col added natural nutrients to his dams and built an environment for cod to spawn and develop.

Murray Gold controls the entire farming process. From artificial burrows that encourage the fish to spawn. Right through early development to fingerling and onto award winning, fine dining, fresh fish.

We are very proud to have won a bronze award at the Melbourne Fine Food awards on our very first entry. We challenge ourselves every day to continually improve the quality of our fish and deliver best practice in everything we do. This award reflects all that effort and motivates us to win a gold award next year

Col Beasley & the Murray Gold Story

With nationwide concern over the decreasing state of the Murray river, farmers initiated a program to build numerous, extensive dams to store water for farming irrigation. Col Beasely, supported by the Victorian Government, began a project to utilise the water in these dams, leading to the water being able to sustain and nurture Murray Gold cod.

Murray Gold & Indigenous Culture

The iconic ‘Ponde’ (indigenous fresh water Murray Cod) has been an integral part of Aboriginal culture and a food source for over 50,000 years.

In Aboriginal Dreaming, Ponde was responsible for the formation of the Murray River and its ecosystem. According to legend, a huge Ponde burst forth from the depths of the earth at the source of the Murray River, leaving a small stream of water trickling to the Southern ocean. Ponde struggled along the narrow stream, digging with its head and swinging its tail, making the river deep and forming all the bends, billabongs and other features of the river. Nepelle, the Great Prophet, speared it with the help of the hero Ngurunderi. Nepelle and Ngurunderi cut Ponde into pieces and threw the fragments into the water, naming them for all the native fish of the river. When they had finished, they threw the remainder back and said ‘You keep on being Ponde’.
